Care after bone marrow transplantation
Article Abstract:
A team at the Royal Marsden Hospital in Surrey have shown that it is possible to manage patients undergoing autologous transplant in an open ward environment without increased risks. However, some patients will need care in a suitable protective environment during the pancytopenic phase of low blood cell counts. Mouth infections due to damage by chemotherapy can be prevented with the use of antiseptic and antifungal mouthwashes. Patients need to maintain a good fluid intake and a low microbial diet should be adhered to. Skin tunnelled catheter sites must be kept clean and dry and temperature, blood pressure, pulse and respiration rates should be recorded regularly.
