Medicare treatment varies considerably throughout the US, according to a national study conducted by Dr. John Wennberg at Dartmouth University. Wennberg's study examines regional disparities in Medicare expenditures and treatments. For example, Wennberg found that overall annual spending on Medicare fee-for-service beneficiaries averaged $3,929 per beneficiary. However, spending in Miami, FL, averaged $5,966 while Medicare expenditures in Lincoln, NE, averaged $2,729.

Budget changes aim to improve Medicare
Article Abstract:
Pres Clinton's 1998-2002 Medicare budget plan includes provisions that would create new user fees, fraud deterrents, payment options, and coverage rules. Clinton's budget would allow Medicare officials to seek competitive bids from all Medicare Part B providers except physicians. Clinton's budget would also allow for alternative payment discussions between the government and suppliers. A list of Medicare changes outlined in the budget are presented.
