Cases with ruptured membranes that 'reseal'
Article Abstract:
Rupture of the fetal membranes ('bag of waters') prematurely (too early in gestation) is a relatively common complication of pregnancy occurring in 8 to 25 percent of women. The debate continues over the optimal treatment for premature rupture of membranes. Rarely, the membranes rupture and then 'reseal', and leakage of amniotic fluid (in which the fetus floats) then stops. Treatment and outcome of 24 such cases is described and evaluated. These women (the cases) 'resealed', and a group of women with similar symptoms and similar gestational ages who did not 'reseal' were also studied (controls). Results showed no differences between the two groups in age, race, marital status, socioeconomic status, substance abuse, or previous obstetrical outcomes. Control patients more commonly had greatly reduced amniotic fluid volumes than case patients. Case patients typically had longer gestations prior to delivery, with 30 percent delivering prematurely (compared with 100 percent for controls). Four perinatal (just before or just after birth) deaths occurred in the control group and none occurred in the case group; in addition, the 'reseal' group had larger infants and reduced perinatal illness. Therapeutic approaches that would promote 'resealing' are not known, but it seems clear that, when it occurs, the process improves the outcome of the pregnancy. Such patients will benefit from expectant management. (Consumer Summary produced by Reliance Medical Information, Inc.)

Hypertensive disease in pregnancies complicated by systemic lupus erythematosus
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted with the purpose of assessing the percentage of hypertensive disease in pregnancies complicated by systemic lupus erythematosus. It was concluded that the percentage of parturients with systemic lupus erythematosus in whom preeclampsia develops is increased, regardless of the presence of underlying chronic hypertension.

Perinatal outcomes in gestational diabetes: a comparison of criteria for diagnosis
Article Abstract:
Women who are diagnosed with gestational diabetes according to criteria developed by the American Diabetes Association are no more likely to have adverse fetal outcomes than those diagnosed according to criteria developed by the National Diabetes Data Group. Gestational diabetes is a type of diabetes that only occurs during pregnancy.
