Challenging tradition
Article Abstract:
Researchers evaluated a pilot project in Salford, England, which is using a new model for the delivery of primary care. The community practice is nurse-led. The nurse operates as an independent contractor employing health and administrative personnel. Interviews with staff revealed general satisfaction with the operation of the service and with the new team spirit. Staff felt that patients appreciated the amount of time they could spend with the nurse. However, some staff and patients had initially been fearful due to lack of information and a feeling that the new service would be a cheap option.

Article Abstract:
Helping new nurses become involved in both the everyday work side of ward practice as well as the social side can assist in the difficult task of settling into a new job. Providing a job partner is an ideal way of ensuring new staff have someone to discuss difficulties and apprehensions in a new role on the wards. Nursing staff are able to settle in faster when they are helped to overcome initial difficulties regarding staff names and supply locations.
