Article Abstract:
The responsibility for funding and supplying home parenteral nutrition (HPN) lies with local health authorities. There are between 250 and 300 patients in the United Kingdom who require HPN and it costs between 18,000 pounds sterling and 40,000 pounds. Health authorities are now putting HPN contracts out to tender to ensure they get value for money. It is important that patients are kept informed about any changes and that their supplies arrive on time. Most patients are treated by a specialist hospital, although local hospitals may be involved in an emergency.

Article Abstract:
The nutritional aspects of nursing have been devalued and there has been a blurring of the roles relating to responsibility for nutrition. Sophisticated techniques for enteral and parenteral nutrition were developed in the 1970s and 1980s, but certain studies have pointed to a lack of awareness and monitoring of the nutritional status of patients. It is important in clinical nutrition to maintain physiological and psychological function, to prevent complications and promote recovery.

Article Abstract:
Nurses need to be provided with more organisational support when carrying out nutrition assessment on elderly or acute care patients, according to a study which found the pressure of nurses' work loads often prevented them from ensuring patients eat what was given to them. A lack of appetite in an elderly person can be an indication of underlying problems which must be addressed.
