Change necessary, but more study needed on 'how.'(reform of the American Medical Association)(Column)
Article Abstract:
Reform of the American Medical Assn is necessary to make the professional body as relevant as possible to physicians in the US. However, the Study of the Federation, which was presented to the AMA House of Delegates in Dec 1995, does not contain the changes necessary. Among its recommendations was to deny representation in the House to the 40,000 or so physicians who choose not to join state or county medical associations, to adopt proportional representation in the House and to add two members to the AMA board. The House rightly rejected the Study and sent it back to the Federation for further work as it does nothing to increase the AMA's relevance to practicing US physicians.

Notice to physicians: the American Medical Assn. is you
Article Abstract:
The American Medical Association (AMA) is an organization dedicated to serving the needs of all physicians; thus all members should believe that they have a voice in the policy and decisions of the AMA. Some physicians complain that the AMA serves only special interests or is ineffective in helping physicians to adapt to changing circumstances. The AMA attempts to represent the needs of all physicians, including specialists and surgeons and general practitioners, despite differences in social and economic backgrounds.

Membership in organized medicine 'static' at best
Article Abstract:
Membership in organized medicine, either the American Medical Assn or various state and local associations, is stable or declining. The downward pressure on association membership is driven by consolidation in group practices, bottom line pressure from managed care contracts, and the perception that medical associations no longer provide enough value to justify the high dues.
