Retirement: perceptions of a professional couple
Article Abstract:
In life, people are always preparing for the next stage. Crawling children are preparing to walk. High school students are preparing for college, and professional school students are preparing for careers. Ironically, retirement seems to be the one stage for which preparing simply is not done. For most, "retirement planning" consists of saving money for retirement, but there is no sense of preparing for the psychological adjustments which come from this major change in lifestyle. Psychologists speak of "relocation neurosis" and see it often in retirement communities. Retired people may be busy from morning to night, but feel no sense of accomplishment or purpose in the way their time is spent. It is important to evaluate your goals and aspirations, considering whether you are satisfied with your career and now wish to move on to other things, or you feel a sense attachment to your profession which may leave a void when broken. Retirement provides an opportunity for many new beginnings, but often individuals look at the door which has closed behind them rather than the new ones which have opened up.
