Changing patterns of student nurse recruitment - 2
Article Abstract:
The 1990 survey of recruitment information provided by nursing schools found that recruitment literature has improved, but still needs further improvement. Since the last survey in 1980, all nursing schools are fostering further contact and candidates can visit schools to become better informed. Brochure information on entry requirements, background to nursing, and holidays and hours has not been given as much attention as information on the local area, the schools' structure and career opportunities. With the restructuring of the National Health Service and such training initiatives as Project 2000, greater emphasis has been placed on the nurse's role, for which information is given. Whilst recruitment literature has improved, clearer information on facilities, opportunities for mature students, pay, support and education requirements is still needed to attract prospective nursing staff.

The clinical nurse tutor debate
Article Abstract:
Project 2000 has given greater emphasis to nursing tutors having more clinical commitment, but it is unrealistic to expect them to be an expert in a specialist field. Nursing tutors are not able to practise clinically whilst acting as tutors. There is insufficient time for them to gain clinical proficiency within the constraints of their workload. Tutors themselves have the responsibility for clinical expertise, but they should be actively supported by the establishment. There ought to be a programme allowing clinical credibility to be maintained and improved.
