Changing the face of mental illness
Article Abstract:
A government consultation document has announced that care in the community has been a failure and more money needs to be spent on mental health services so that public confidence can be restored. Institutional care is not being recommended but emergency psychiatric care teams and high-security care must be available. Twenty-four hour care must be available for young people with serious illness. This will require extra financing and support. Work also has to be done to improve the general public's perception of mental illness.

Nurses working in mental health services will be disturbed at the level of shilly-shallying
Article Abstract:
The UK government seems to be taking the issue of community care for the mentally ill very seriously. However, it has yet to devise a clear policy, and this is causing concern among nurses working in mental health services. In particular, some observers fear that the government may not be able to resist the temptation to place more emphasis on publicity than on solid policies. It is now clear that action must be taken to deal with care in the community, even if this proves very expensive.
