Alternative Medicine Use by Homeless Youth
Article Abstract:
Many homeless teenagers use alternative medicine. A survey of 157 homeless teens attending a free clinic found that 70% used alternative medicine. Many considered alternative medicine more natural than traditional medicine and 87% believed they had benefitted from alternative medicine. Half would seek care from a traditional physician but 37% would also consider an alternative practitioner. Clinics providing traditional medicine might consider offerring alternative medical services to encourage homeless teens to use both types of services.

Improving Participation and Interrater Agreement in Scoring Ambulatory Pediatric Association Abstracts: How Well Have We Succeeded?
Article Abstract:
It may be difficult to get two or more pediatricians to agree whether an abstract should be accepted for display at an annual meeting. Researchers analyzed the ability of two or more pediatricians to rate an abstract. In 1990, all abstracts submitted for the annual meeting were rated by 11 members of the board of directors of the Ambulatory Pediatric Association. In 1995, abstracts were rated by 20 potential reviewers. Increasing the number of raters did not improve the agreement score between two or more raters, which remained at 79%.
