Chiropractic looking good: when will the other shoe drop?

The chiropractic profession has recently received very good publicity, and there is evidence of increased recognition and awareness of the contribution of chiropractic to health care. Chiropractic now has the opportunity to expand its influence and take a more active role in health care issues. Chiropractic has been included in the original draft of the Mitchell Bill, S.1277 known as 'Health America', legislation that would assure health insurance coverage for all Americans. A major medical publication in Britain has reported chiropractic care to be twice as effective as traditional medical care for treating low back pain. Today, in this country, many long-established ideas have changed; people are disappointed in their banks and their traditional medical care. The key to the future of chiropractic is that it must be part of the trend in health care. The profession should become more concerned about public opinion, and energies and funds should be organized to motivate public opinion. Chiropractic practitioners should be known as conservative providers of health care, trained as providers of primary care, with an emphasis on 'hands-on healing'. It has been said that health care deals with promoting and protecting health, whereas medical care has a more narrow focus; it is concerned with healing. Chiropractic can be a link between public health and the curative health care system. The American Chiropractic Association will develop standards of practice to focus on patient well-being. These will include having managed-care buyers accepting chiropractic; lobbying for inclusion in national health insurance; improving the insurance industry's perception of chiropractic; increasing benefit managers' understanding of the value of chiropractic coverage; and increasing public awareness of the benefits of chiropractic. A thousand points of light for chiropractic

The 'thousand points of light' campaign suggested by President George Bush refers to the benefits of cooperation. When there is a joining of effort, a thousand sparks can unite to become a powerful energy source. Chiropractic, with 40,000 practitioners nationwide, could get quite a public relations message across if the voices all conveyed a clear, unified message. But if the voices differ, the result is a clutter of noise and confusing information. If messages are to get through to the consuming public, they must be simple and clear, and also consistent. In the profession of chiropractic, the message about the health benefits chiropractors can offer is being lost because too many people are trying to get the message across in too many different, and sometimes unethical, ways. The American Chiropractic Association has a well-developed public relations program, but it is underutilized. More practitioners need to take advantage of this service.
