Cholinergic agonists inhibit HMGB1 release and improve survival in experimental sepsis
Article Abstract:
The neurotransmitter acetylcholine that inhibits high mobility group box 1 (HMGB1) release from human macrophages by signaling through a nicotinic acetylcholine receptor is reported. The results support acetylcholine as the first known physiological inhibitor of HMGB1 release from human macrophages, and suggest that selective nicotinic agonists for the alpha7nAChR might have therapeutic potential for the treatment of sepsis.

The inflammatory reflex
Article Abstract:
This review delineates the role of nervous system in the regulation of the inflammatory response and how this function can be exploited to treat inflammation via a selective and reversible 'hard-wired' neural systems. Research indicates that the cholinergic neurons inhibit acute inflammation, suggesting modulation of immune response by the nervous system.
