Cidofovir: a new therapy for cytomegalovirus retinitis
Article Abstract:
Cidofovir is a newly developed treatment for cytomegalovirus retinitis. Cytomegalovirus retinitis is an infection of the retina caused by cytomegalovirus. Cidofovir is a nucleotide analogue that does not require viral activation in the cell. Consequently, it may protect uninfected cells from becoming infected. It may also work in patients who have become resistant to ganciclovir. Clinical trials have shown that the drug can cause kidney damage, but this may be avoided by concurrent administration of the drug probenecid. A change in dosage can also lessen kidney toxicity.

Cytomegalovirus retinitis: diagnosis and status of systemic therapy
Article Abstract:
Many AIDS patients develop cytomegalovirus retinitis, which is an infection of the retina by cytomegalovirus. It usually occurs in patients who are severely immunosuppressed, with T cell counts of 50 or fewer. Symptoms include floaters, blurred vision and loss of central or peripheral vision. It may be difficult to distinguish from other retinal diseases, but most ophthalmologists become skilled in the diagnosis. Ganciclovir and foscarnet are the most commonly used drug treatments and are best used together. However, they are not without side effects.

Randomized, controlled study of the safety and efficacy of intravenous cidofovir for the treatment of relapsing cytomegalovirus retinitis in patients with AIDS
Article Abstract:
Cidofovir may effectively delay the progression of cytomegalovirus (CMV) retinitis in patients with AIDS. CMV retinitis is an infection in the eye that can damage the retina and lead to blindness. Researchers evaluated weekly maintenance doses of cidofovir in 150 AIDS patients with relapsing CMV retinitis that had resisted other drug treatments. Cidofovir effectively delayed progression of the condition, and prevented the need for daily intravenous medication required when other drugs are used.
