Cigarette Smoking Among Adults--United States, 1997
Article Abstract:
The US probably will not meet the goal of Healthy People 2000 when it comes to cigarette smoking. The goal was to reach the point where only 15% of all Americans smoked. The 1997 National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) of 36,116 adult Americans found that 24.7% were current smokers. This figure is unchanged from a similar survey in 1995. An estimated 48.0 million adults, including 25.7 million men and 22.3 million women, were current smokers in 1997. Smoking was more common in young people, blacks, American Indians/Alaska Natives, people with little education and the poor.
