Cigarette smoking among adults - United States, 1994
Article Abstract:
The US must increase its efforts to get Americans to stop smoking. In 1994, an estimated 48 million American adults smoke. This represents 25.5% of the adult population, which is a long way from the 15% goal of Healthy People 2000. The percentage of adults who smoke was essentially unchanged from 1993. Smoking rates are highest in Native Americans and lowest in Asians and Pacific Islanders. Men are more likely to smoke than women. Those with little education and low incomes were also more likely to smoke. An estimated 69% of all smokers want to quit.
