Hepatitis A among homosexual men - United States, Canada, and Australia
Article Abstract:
Homosexual men may have a higher risk of being infected with hepatitis A virus (HAV) through sexual activity in the 1990s than in the previous decade. The incidence of hepatitis A among homosexual men in cities in the US, Canada and Australia increased during the first six months of 1991. HAV is transmitted by oral contact with feces, and male homosexual activity is a risk factor for this type of infection. But from 1982 to 1989, less than 10% of hepatitis A patients reported engaging in homosexual activity. The increase in hepatitis A infections among homosexual men may be caused by an increase in sexual activity and number of partners, a return to unsafe sexual practices, or misinformation about sexually transmitted diseases other than HIV. The incidence of hepatitis B among homosexual men has also increased. Efforts by public health officials to educate homosexual men on the transmission of HAV may reduce the spread of hepatitis A.

Update: trends in AIDS incidence - United States, 1996
Article Abstract:
Deaths from AIDS dropped 23% in 1996, mostly because antiretroviral drugs have improved the survival of those infected with HIV. About half of the approximately 235,470 diagnosed cases are in homosexual men. The number of newly diagnosed AIDS cases grew 11% from 1995 to 1996. The largest growth in AIDS cases has been among men and women infected during heterosexual contact. Testing and screening programs must facilitate early diagnosis and treatment, and CDC recommends surveillance of HIV infections in addition to AIDS diagnoses to collect more useful and timely information about the disease.
