Cleaning, sterilization and disinfection: basics of microbial killing for infection control
Article Abstract:
Several processes are used to kill bacteria and other microorganisms on dental equipment. Cleaning instruments and surfaces first can reduce bacterial contamination and remove blood and saliva. Cleaning is commonly done by hand or by using ultrasound. Sterilization involves the use of steam, chemicals or gas. It must last at least 10 hours and usually kills all microorganisms and spores. Disinfection can be done in less time, but may not kill bacterial spores. Techniques for cleaning, disinfecting and sterilizing dental equipment and surfaces are described.

Using extracted teeth for research: the effect of storage medium and sterilization on dentin bond strengths
Article Abstract:
The null hypothesis that the storage medium and sterilization method have no effect on dentin bond strengths is studied. Lower bond strength was found in bovine inscisors stored in sodium hypochlorite (NaClO), and sterilization with the autoclave showed negative effects on bond strength. The methods used and other results of the study are discussed as well.
