Clinical Research:Perceptions, Reality, and Proposed Solutions
Article Abstract:
A panel of physicians selected by the National Instututes of Health has recommended ways to increase the number of physicians conducting patient care research. In 1998, only 25% of physicians apply for research grants in patient care compared to 40% in the 1960s. The panel recommends including more physicians on panels that review research grants and offering courses on patient care research. Other recommendations include mentoring medical students in patient care research, and encouraging physicians to collaborate with scientists doing basic research as well as their colleagues working in industry.

Some imperatives for clinical research
Article Abstract:
There are several ways to ensure financial support for patient-based medical research. This support has eroded because hospitals have to charge patients less in order to compete with managed care. Thus, the hospital has less revenue to fund clinical research. A 1% assessment on health care premiums could raise $4 billion to $8 billion for clinical research. It is also imperative to train physicians in clinical research. This could be done by creating programs at specific medical schools that have the expertise and infrastructure to train physicians in research design and statistics.

Encouraging Clinical Research by Physician Scientists
Article Abstract:
New initiatives are required to increase the number of physicians participating in patient care research. Between 1994 and 1996, the number of physicians applying for research grants dropped 30%. Many studies on patients are time-consuming, complex, and involve many investigators at many institutions. This tends to discourage many physicians from participating in them. Institutions should provide more support for physicians who want to do research. The NIH should also ensure that grant money will be available. More physicians should serve on the panels that review research grants.
