Clinical sexually transmitted diseases among human immunodeficiency virus-infected and noninfected drug-using prostitutes: associated factors and interpretation of trends, 1986 to 1994
Article Abstract:
Reductions in sexually transmitted disease (STD) rates seen in drug-using Dutch prostitutes seem to be explained only in part by safer business practices. STD rates between 1986 and 1994 and sexual behaviors among 229 drug-using Dutch prostitutes were analyzed. The incidence of chlamydia, gonorrhea, and HIV infections decreased substantially during this time period. Trichomoniasis infection rates were variable. Consistent condom use and fewer sexual partners explained only a portion of this reduction. Participants newer to the profession, infected with HIV, or who used condoms infrequently were at greater risk for an STD.

Partner referral by patients with gonorrhea and chlamydial infection: case-finding observations
Article Abstract:
A program designed to identify and treat partners exposed to a sexually transmitted disease (STD) appears to be more successful for selected patient populations. Contact with 580 exposed sexual partners was attempted based on identification made by 355 patients with a confirmed STD. Forty percent of the exposed partners were located and treated either by the study clinic or another clinic. Referral rates were higher for infected females, those with chlamydia, and those in a long-term relationship. Nearly two-thirds of the exposed females and one-third of the exposed males seen at a clinic were found to be infected.

Determinants of high-risk sexual behavior among immigrant groups in Amsterdam: implications for interventions
Article Abstract:
The authors report on their study of male immigrants in Amsterdam to find predictors of unsafe sex in three aspects: multiple sex partners; unprotected casual sex in the Netherlands, and sexual activity in their original home country. The men were from Surinam, the Antilles, and Ghana. Predictors included country of origin, medical history, and stability of relationships.
