Clinicians' self-assessment: questions and answers in substance abuse treatment
Article Abstract:
Ten questions on the treatment of substance abuse provide a means for physicians and other clinicians to evaluate their knowledge of the subject. The questions cover such matters as basic research on the mechanisms underlying addiction, the causes of abstinence syndrome, the criteria for deciding if a teenage patient should receive inpatient treatment and which benzodiazepine is absorbed most quickly and causes euphoria most effectively. Answers are provided.

A set of questions to test the ability of a psychiatrist to treat substance abuse is presented. These include the identification of the condition characterized by the inability to label affects and to verbalize affects states, and the identification of the disorder common among alcoholics characterized by irritability, emotional lability, insomnia and anxiety that lingers for weeks to months after alcohol withdrawal.

Article Abstract:
Questions and answers regarding the field of substance abuse treatment were combined to form a general clinicians' self-assesment questionnaire. The questionnaire seeks to measure a practitioner's knowledge on topics involved with substance abuse treatment such as pharmacologic agents, anabolic steroids, imaging techniques, benzodiazepines, Axis II disorders and narcotic antagonists.
