Article Abstract:
A 52-year-old man who has Friedreich's ataxia discusses how his condition affects his life. The practical and psychological strategies he uses to cope with Friedreich's ataxia are detailed, and his belief that his condition is merely a mechanical dysfunction is highlighted. Particular attention is given to his encounters with nurses, in which communication can be a problem. His negative experiences of hospital treatment are considered, and the way in which health professionals tend to try to control of his life is discussed.

Friends for life and death: just being there at a close friend's suicide involves the full force of the law even if no assistance in the act is given
Article Abstract:
The case of a women's attendance at a friend's suicide is discussed. The friend was suffering from multiple sclerosis and was increasingly paralysed until eventually she could only watch television or listen to to the radio. The woman did not assist in her friend's death, but was reported to the police for aiding and abetting the death. However the Crown Prosecution Service decided there was no case to answer.

Grief encounters
Article Abstract:
The training and liaison team of the British Army in Kenya (BATLSK) assisted at the scene of the bombing of the US embassy in Nairobi, Kenya, on August 7 1998. Soldiers found two survivors and lifted the bodies and remains of the dead from the bombsite. The army also provided psychiatric services to those affected by the bombing.
