Coalition presses to preserve affirmative action in medicine
Article Abstract:
Efforts to end affirmative action are damaging to the medical profession, according to a coalition of top health, medical and education associations. 'Health Professionals for Diversity' was formed on Aug 1, 1996, to preserve affirmative action in the health sector. Physicians' race, gender and ethnicity have direct impacts on their ability to serve minority populations, according to a study entitled 'Physician Service to the Underserved: Implications for Affirmative Action in Medical Education.'

The use of outcomes measurements of health care professionals will increase in the future. Employers will use the information to evaluate their health care providers as part of their effort to control rising health care costs. Providers will continue to use outcomes measurement information in their marketing campaigns. Information systems will have to become more sophisticated if outcomes measurement is to be used to its fullest potential.

Rural provider group presses GME funding concerns
Article Abstract:
The National Rural Health Association (NRHA) is pressing for the revision of the funding mechanisms for graduate medical education (GME). The rural provider group feels the payment system is outdated and incongruous with work force needs. The NRHA supports the use of consortia and feels that current payment system results in disproportionate geographic distribution of funds.
