Still a mystery but 'not likely' a virus
Article Abstract:
Scientists from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) discussed possible causes of T-cell depletion in patients without HIV infection at a recent meeting. Abnormally low blood levels of CD4 T-cells, or cells of the immune system, is characteristic of HIV infection. Twenty-one individuals with unexplained CD4 T-cell depletion have been reported to the CDC between 1989 and Jul 1992. Two researchers have hypothesized that unexplained T-cell depletion is caused by a retrovirus. Other scientists are skeptical about the involvement of a virus. The retrovirus hypothesis has prompted the press to label this phenomenon 'MTV', or 'media transforming virus'. Patients with unexplained T-cell depletion may be suffering from different types of disorders, rather than from the same one. These patients have had different types of infections, and 54% were not in a high risk category for HIV infection.
