Community centers show acute care promise; payment a problem
Article Abstract:
Many mental healthcare experts believe that community-based acute care may be an effective treatment for the mentally ill, but funding for the programs has been sparse. Additionally, only about 40 US programs are available for the mentally ill, despite the lower cost. One reason for the shortage of funding is that private insurers and Medicaid may have a bias toward hospital-based acute care. However, many mental healthcare experts feel that community-based acute care should be supported if only because it offers more treatment choices for the mentally ill.
