Retroviral coinfections at a New Orleans HIV outpatient clinic
Article Abstract:
Some people infected with HIV may also be infected with human T-lymphotropic viruses I and II (HTLV-I and HTLV-II). Researchers tested 854 HIV-infected patients for HTLV-I and HTLV-II. Twenty-five were also infected with HTLV-I and 35 were infected with HTLV-II. Older black with a history of intravenous drug use were more likely to be co-infected with HTLV-II or HTLV-II. Co-infection did not appear to increase the progression of HIV infection to AIDS. Those with high CD4 counts were more likely to be infected with HTLV-II and those with high CD8 counts were more likely to be infected with HTLV-I.
