Comparison of urinary hyperglycosylated human chorionic gonadotropin concentration with the serum triple screen for Down syndrome detection in high-risk pregnancies
Article Abstract:
Measuring the amount of hyperglycosylated human chorionic gonadotropin in a pregnant woman's urine is more accurate than the traditional triple screen test for Down syndrome, according to a study of 524 pregnant women. The triple screen measures human chorionic gonadotropin, alpha-fetoprotein, and unconjugated estrogen in blood samples.

Ratio of nuchal thickness to humerus length for Down syndrome detection
Article Abstract:
Dividing the thickness of the fetal neck by the length of its upper arm bone can detect 80% of fetuses with possible Down syndrome. The measurements can be made from an ultrasound scan and are based on the fact that fetuses with Down syndrome have thicker necks and shorter arm bones compared to healthy fetuses.

Subtle ultrasonographic anomalies: do they improve the Down syndrome detection rate?
Article Abstract:
Ultrasonographic identification of abnormalities in the bowel and in the formation of the fingers may be a sensitive indicator of Down syndrome in the developing fetus. Researchers compared ultrasonographic findings with chromosomal analysis by amniocentesis in 3,838 midtrimester pregnancies. A strong ultrasonic echo from the fetal bowel or delayed development of the fifth finger, called clinodactyly, was associated with Down syndrome in 29% of cases. These findings, when combined with other ultrasonographically identified defects, predicted 63% of Down syndrome cases.
