Complement in acute and chronic arthritides: assessment of C3c, C9, and protein (CD59) in synovial membrane
Article Abstract:
Increased levels of some complement factors and decreased levels of protectin may partly explain the inflammatory damage seen in patients with acute arthritides and rheumatoid arthritis. Complement factors promote the immune response while protectin inhibits the process. The complement factors C3c and C9 and protectin levels were measured in joint tissue samples from 34 patients with either rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, acute arthritides, or other joint disabilities. C3c and C9 were present and protectin was decreased or absent in the samples from patients with rheumatoid arthritis or arthritides.

Expression of tenascin-C in aseptic loosening of total hip replacement
Article Abstract:
An increase in the production of tenascin-C in artificial joints may indicate joint loosening. This chemical naturally occurs in the body and is involved in wound healing. Researchers found high levels of tenascin-C in synovial fluid samples from 10 people with a loosening of their total hip replacement, but not in 10 patients who were receiving a total hip replacement. Since tenascin-C is only produced in high levels at the site of an injury, this indicates that artificial joint loosening may be caused by chronic inflammation around the joint.

Analysis of 16 different matrix metalloproteinases (MMP-1 to MMP-20) in the synovial membrane: different profiles in trauma and rheumatoid arthritis
Article Abstract:
The authors describe differences in patterns of matrix metalloproteinases, which form enzyme families, to demonstrate the different processes which are occurring in the body when it is repairing itself from external trauma as distinct from the situation when the tissue is being destroyed by inflammation.
