Complementary care: when is it appropriate? Who will provide it?
Article Abstract:
Physicians should encourage research and the development of guidelines for the use of alternative and complementary medical techniques in clinical practice. The Agency for Health Care Policy and Research concluded that chiropractic may be appropriate for some patients with acute low back pain, and the NIH supports limited applications of acupuncture. If these therapeutic techniques are to be incorporated into traditional medical practice, more rigorous standards of training, research, and clinical use must be established. Then, they will become a part of good medicine.
