Complications according to mode of delivery among human immunodeficiency virus-infected women with CD4 lymphocyte counts of less than or equal to 500 per microliter
Article Abstract:
Women infected with HIV may have a higher risk of postoperative wound infections after a cesarean delivery. These women should be given preoperative antibiotics to prevent such complications.

Herpes simplex virus seropositivity and reactivation at delivery among pregnant women infected with human immunodeficiency virus-1
Article Abstract:
HIV-positive pregnant women appear to be at greater risk for infection with and complications from herpes simplex virus-2 (HSV-2) than HIV-negative pregnant women. Blood tests for HSV-2 were performed at delivery on 60 HIV-positive women and 8,408 HIV-negative women. Genital swab tests were performed on a portion of each group. Seventy-five percent of the HIV-positive women and 32% of the HIV-negative women also tested positive for HSV-2. Swab test results revealed active infection in 8% of the HIV-positive women and 2% of the HIV-negative women.

Risk factors for perinatal transmission of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 in women treated with zidovudine
Article Abstract:
Pregnant women infected with HIV and treated with zidovudine are less likely to transmit the virus to their infant if their viral load is low. Researchers compared 480 HIV-positive women for factors that might influence perinatal transmission of the infection. Women with viral loads below detectable limits, indicating effective viral suppression by the antiviral drug, are unlikely to infect their child during pregnancy or delivery.
