Critical condition: the deaths of two patients who were in desperate need of intensive carehave drawn attention to an acute bed shortage in UK ICUs
Article Abstract:
Following the deaths of two patients whowere in need of intensive care there has been a call for a national review of intensive care bednumbers and staffing levels. The government claims that the number of specialist intensive carebeds is increasing, although anecdotal nursing evidence indicates that beds are forced to closedue to lack of staff or cash. Chairwoman of the RCN's Critical Care Nurses' Forum, RuthEndercott, believes that ICUs should have spare capacity and that there should be better use ofhigh dependency units.

Alternative London
Article Abstract:
Nuring unions deny the Tomlinson report assertion that London has too many hospital beds. They argue insufficient finance rather than demand has resulted in bed closures. No hospitals should be closed until waiting lists have been cut. They agree that primary care is inadequate but consider community cervices should be improved without closing hospitals. Most consider inadequate funds will be available for the proposed changes.
