Corn, Columbus, and culture
Article Abstract:
The genetic transformation of corn from its presumed ancestor, teosinte, was discussed. Genetic transformation from teosinte may have been influenced by deliberate in-breeding by early Americans with the intention of producing multiple kernels since teosinte only has two rows of single female spikelets on a cob. Moreover, the spread of people through the Americas has led to the diversification of maize through chance, drift, isolation and adaptation.
