Cycling behaviour and cycle helmet use: a survey of university students
Article Abstract:
Cycling levels in the UK could be considerably increased, with only around 2% of all trips currently being made by bicycle, despite a 79% increase in bicycle ownership between 1975-76 and 1985-86. A survey of students at Manchester University aimed to obtain information on how to promote the health aspects of cycling and how to encourage safer cycling. It showed that the public view of cycling as dangerous must be changed if cycling levels are to be increased, with bicycle theft also discouraging people from cycling, and also indicated that the cost and design of cycling helmets must be reconsidered in order to encourage more widespread use.

Smoking behaviour before and after attendance at a health promotion clinic in general practice
Article Abstract:
A study of smoking behaviour carried out by a nurse-run health promotion centre revealed a 3.2% drop in cigarette smoking and 1.2% in overall smoking (including other forms of tobacco). It was found that although 31.1% stopped smoking cigarettes, 12.2% had started smoking other forms of tobacco; and of those who claimed not to smoke at the start of the study, 2.5% had taken up cigarette smoking. Many surveys do not include other forms of tobacco use, or those who start-up the habit. Background to the health clinic, the survey and its findings are discussed in greater detail.

Evaluation of training in behaviour change counselling skills: the application of clinical-audit methodology
Article Abstract:
National Health Service reforms in the UK have largely been responsible for the move towards preventative health care and away from diagnosis and treatment. However, research shows that some nurses working in primary health care feel they need more experience in health promotion and communication skills. A study of a training course in behaviour change counselling skills using clinical-audit methods is designed to assess the effectiveness of the method and identify further areas of research.
