Cystic fibrosis gene testing a challenge: experts say widespread use is creating unnecessary risks
Article Abstract:
Doctors who want to test all couples for gene mutations that cause cystic fibrosis should use guidelines provided by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the American College of Medical Genetics. Most tests cover the 25 most common gene mutations, but they only identify 80% of all white carriers. Among ethnic groups, the percentage may be even less.
