Polio strikes back
Article Abstract:
The devastating affects of poliomyelitis (polio) has made it one of the most feared diseases of the 20th century. The virus was first identified in 1909 when it was discovered to be passed through faeces infected water. Several attempts were made during the early part of the century to develop a vaccine, although the first successful vaccine was not developed until 1953, which reduced the incidence of polio in the USA by 90% in 1961.

What is ebola?

Ebola, a haemorrhagic fever, is mainly found in northern Zaire and southern Sudan. It has an incubation period of between five and eight days, with a fatality rate of between 70% and 90%. It is vital that barrier nursing procedures are used when caring for a patient with Ebola.
