Danger zones
Article Abstract:
Nurses are developing their roles and taking on more responsibility, such as prescribing drugs. However, this may result in nurses facing legal action alongside the doctors they work with. The development of protocols, which would outline exactly what a nurse could do, have been resisted by politicians and unions, but the lack of protocols leave nurses vulnerable. Verifying death is another difficult area because nurses are being asked to do a task for which they are not trained. Nurses need to get their role defined by management and agree the extent of their accountability.

Prescribed confusion
Article Abstract:
A legal expert from the Royal College of Nursing has consulted lawyers at the Department of Health regarding the issue of nurses performing tasks which they are probably not meant to, such as prescribing drugs to patients. To prevent nurses doing so would over-burden doctors and reduce the contribution which nurses can make to the health service. Another approach is to legalise prescription writing by nurses. This would enhance the profession. Nursing unions are advising nurses to adhere to the legislation until the matter can be sorted out.

The route to effective nurse-patient communication. (includes related articles)
Article Abstract:
Communication is an important part of nursing practice although the profession has experienced difficulties in practising communication skills due to structural factors such as stressed and unsupportive areas, and negative institutionalised attitudes. The benefits of communication to patient recovery outcomes have been demonstrated by research.
