Dead-end street
Article Abstract:
Learning disability needs specialist nurses, but the consensus conference panel's means of achieving that will eliminate the learning disability nursing profession. The panel's decision does not take account of the fact that most people go into learning disability nursing because they like working with the learning disabled more than they want to be nurses. Recruits will therefore judge the panel's proposed education period of three years as too long. Specifically trained staff with a good ethical code are needed to protect the learning disabled.

Article Abstract:
Community care is threatening the future of learning disability nursing as a nursing speciality in the 1990s. In Somerset, England and Gwent, Wales social services are managing learning-disabled clients. However, nursing posts have disappeared in Somerset whereas Gwent has adopted a collaborative approach. Client needs form the basis of care and Gwent has recognised the need for nursing input. However, nurses are responsible for proving their worth in the redevelopment of client-orientated services.

Victim support
Article Abstract:
Organisations should introduce policies for reducing and coping with assaults on nurses. Patient violence is not a reflection on the professional ability of nurses yet many are reluctant to report incidents. Organisations should encourage full reporting as knowledge of violence triggers will assist future management. Debriefing by experienced counsellors may provide more information than form-filling. Managers and nurses should participate in risk minimisation training sessions.
