Dedicated palliative care
Article Abstract:
A nurse discusses how he helped to organize opening a residential centre to cater specifically for HIV and AIDS patients with mental health problems. The centre offers long-stay and day-care provision and it is staffed by nurses, health care assistants, a doctor and an occupational nurse. Most patients are men aged between 30 and 40. The centre has a conservatory and roof garden and has a homely feel to it. Relatives are involved as much as possible and staff offer counselling if needed. Policies were developed to cover observation, handling, restraint and dealing with emergencies.
