Using Orem's model in the care of adolescents
Article Abstract:
Adolescence is a time of great physical and emotional change for young people, not least for those who are hospitalised. The impact of illness on the development of the emerging adult can often be stressful. Nursing care for such adolescents should be based on a thorough understanding of their emotional and physical development. Adolescents should be involved in their own hospital care, while nurses shouldd be able to support both their physiological and emotional needs. Orem's self-care model can assist hospitalized adolescents and their families by allowing both to be involved in patient care.

Creating a special information pack for adolescents in hospital
Article Abstract:
The introduction of an information booklet at the Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children enabled nurses to meet the emotional and physical requirements of older children staying in hospital. The pack was developed after health professionals at the hospital realised the different requirements of older children were not being met by the standard hospital policies. Young people need to be more informed about their treatment than small children, allowing time for question and answer sessions, while privacy issues may also be discussed.

Managing adolescents with type-1 diabetes
Article Abstract:
It is common for adolescent diabetics not to manage their condition properly, as they come under peer pressure which makes it hard to deal with their disease. Health professionals should be careful not to criticize risky behaviour in adolescent diabetics, and should ensure that patients are free to discuss their behaviour openly.
