Analysts estimate that the major drugmakers have as much as $10 billion to spend on research and development or investments in other segments of the healthcare industry, funds that could have a significant impact on the future of health care.

Universal Medical Records Services of Rockville, NY, is marketing a medical records data base service that can be accessed at any time with an 800 telephone number. The records can then be sent by mail, fax or modem. The system retails for $49 initially and $25 per year. The system allows quick access to medical records for patients regardless of where they are and is being marketed to the elderly for use in case of a fall or other sudden emergency.
