Improving access by taking the clinic to the people
Article Abstract:
Physician Wendy Ring operates a mobile medical clinic near Eureka, CA. Although she met with initial resistance from the local medical community, she has made substantial impact on the health of residents in the poor, rural area. She has taken care of a large backlog of children who needed immunizations and adults with chronic diseases who were not receiving medical care. In addition, she accepts MediCal patients; formerly, many had to drive at least 100 miles or more to see a physician who would accept MediCal. Ring finds her work fun and challenging.

Doctors of invention: inspiration - and a lot of perspiration - help physician-inventors build a better device
Article Abstract:
Dr. Leo Rubin and other members of the American College of Physician Inventors help physicians with the design, patenting and marketing of medical devices. Rubin invented a defibrillator and pacemaker, but he experienced long delays before the product was made available. The slow pace of the development process requires physician-inventors to possess patience and perseverance. Several medical devices invented by physicians are described.
