Research priorities for Parkinson's recommended
Article Abstract:
A workshop was held by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke and two other NIH agencies in Oct 1995 to decide how to guide research on Parkinson's disease. Researchers will need to study the causes of early brain cell death. The determination of useful biomarkers for the disease is a priority because these would aid research efforts. A screening method is needed to identify preclinical disease. Positron emission tomography scanning can estimate progression of Parkinson's. Research no longer focuses on environmental factors, with attention having been turned towards genetic predisposition and genetic factors. Patients who acquire the disease genetically appear to be more severely affected and younger when the disease begins to progress. The development of effective drug therapies through the use of clinical trials was considered a key objective. The recommendations will be sent to Congress.

Physician leadership on national drug policy finds addiction treatment works
Article Abstract:
Drug addiction may be as treatable as other chronic diseases, including diabetes, asthma and hypertension. This was the conclusion of a group of physicians who reviewed more than 600 studies of drug addiction treatment. The physicians belong to the Physician Leadership on National Drug Policy, which was formed in 1997 to develop scientifically based approaches to the US drug problem. One finding was that treatment for drug addiction is often successful and is one-tenth the cost of imprisonment. In 1997, 60% of the inmates in federal prisons were there for drug law violations.
