Dental education summits: the challenges ahead
Article Abstract:
Dental schools should try to reduce their expenses so they can continue to operate in the face of state budget shortages. Between 1991 and 1990, state funding of dental schools decreased 22%. During that same period, dental schools increased tuition and fees 10% each year. Dental faculty also earn less than their counterparts in private practice, making it difficult to recruit dentists for faculty positions.

Dental insurance, managed care and traditional practice
Article Abstract:
Managed care probably will not have a significant impact on dental care in the first few years of the 21st century. Many employers are dropping dental benefits or transferring the cost to their employees. Some are moving to preferred provider plans, but these are widely accepted by dentists because they are similar to fee-for-service. In many cities, managed care dental plans have less than 10% market share.

Selling your practice at retirement: are there problems ahead?
Article Abstract:
The number of dentists retiring may exceed the number of dentists joining the workforce. This could reduce the value of a dental practice, making it difficult for dentists to count on proceeds from the sale to finance their retirement.
