Dental implants placed in a patient with multiple myeloma: report of case
Article Abstract:
Multiple myeloma is a malignant condition in which nonfunctional proteins similar to immunoglobulins are manufactured in large quantities, and destructive bone lesions form. The condition is usually fatal within two years of diagnosis, and remissions are rare. The bone deterioration also affects the jaws, especially the lower jaw, causing pain and fractures. Although the condition is terminal, patients who suffer from multiple myeloma with dental complications can be treated. This is illustrated in a case report of a 69-year-old male patient who had been diagnosed two years previously, but who continued to feel well, to exercise, and had minimal signs of pathologic change. The patient's upper left second premolar had fractured, causing the partial denture to fit poorly. Because of other problems in the patient's mouth, dental implants were inserted, rather than constructing a second denture. All procedures were carried out in consultation with the patient's physician, so that implant surgery could be timed optimally with the cancer treatments. Blood counts were performed regularly to identify the best time for dental surgery. The procedure is outlined. Ultimately, a full restorative treatment plan was realized, and the patient's quality of life was enhanced. (Consumer Summary produced by Reliance Medical Information, Inc.)

Protecting your patients: federal case on discharged employee centers on concerns about patient safety
Article Abstract:
The author discusses a case in which a nurse was fired because her history as a former drug addict caused concerns about the safety of the patients. She sued, claiming that her former addiction was a disability and did not effect her work ability. The hospital was forced to defend itself, and prevailed, establishing that any other nurse making the same mistakes would have been fired.
