Are head, neck and facial injuries markers of domestic violence?
Article Abstract:
Women who present for emergency care with head, neck, or facial (HNF) injuries who have not been in motor vehicle accidents may be victims of domestic violence. Out of 127 adult patients who came to an emergency room for treatment of injuries unrelated to a motor vehicle accident, 18 reported that their injuries resulted from assault by a spouse or intimate partner. Seventeen of these had HNF injuries. Overall, 75 patients had HNF injuries of whom 17 (23%) were victims of domestic violence. Fifty-two patients had other injuries but no HNF injuries of whom one (2%) was a victim of domestic violence. Thirty-five percent of the women but only 2.5% of the men reported that their injuries resulted from domestic violence. Patients with HNF injuries were nearly 12 times more likely to be domestic violence victims. However, HNF injuries only suggest domestic violence. They cannot be used to diagnose it.
