Trend analysis of dental expenditures by selected dentist and practice characteristics, 1985-1995
Article Abstract:
More women and part-time dentists contributed to overall dental expenditures in 1995 compared to 1985. This was one conclusion of an analysis of data provided by the annual Survey of Dental Practice between 1985-1995. During this time period, about 75% of all dental care was provided by general practitioners. However, part-time dentists contributed 12% of all care in 1995, up from 5% in 1985. Female dentists contributed four times as much care in 1995 as they did in 1985. Newly trained dentists generated 14% of all costs in 1995, down from 24% in 1985.

Dental care utilization: how saturated is the patient market?
Article Abstract:
Seventy-five percent of Americans visited a dentist in 1997, representing nearly a 50% increase from 1983. Women are more likely to have seen a dentist than men, and those with lower income and educational level use dental services less often. Whites are significantly more likely to have visited a dentist in the past year than blacks or Hispanics. Dental care becomes less common among people over age 44 than among younger people.
