Expression of cell adhesion molecules by endothelium in the human lower uterine segment during parturition at term
Article Abstract:
The process of cervical ripening prior to childbirth may be similar to inflammatory processes. The uterine cervix must soften and dilate to accomodate delivery of the baby. Cervical samples collected during 34 cesarean section procedures were compared for levels of cellular adhesion molecules. The levels of endothelial leukocyte adhesion molecule-1 and vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 were higher in cervices dilated beyond 6 cm than in those dilated to under 2 cm. Levels of these molecules are also elevated at sites of inflammation.

Collagenolysis in the lower uterine segment during parturition at term: correlations with stage of cervical dilatation and duration of labor
Article Abstract:
Enzymes that break down collagen appear to be active during labor. These enzymes are produced by immune cells called neutrophils, which enter the cervix in greater numbers during labor. A study of 62 women showed the number of neutrophils and enzymes in the cervix increased significantly as labor progressed.

Different placentation patterns in viable compared with nonviable tubal pregnancy suggest a divergent clinical management
Article Abstract:
Doppler ultrasound can determine whether an ectopic pregnancy is viable or not depending on where it implants, the extent of trophoblast proliferation and the amount of villous vascularization. Viable pregnancies also have other characteristics that are visible on the ultrasound scan.
