Dentist work force and educational pipeline
Article Abstract:
The number of dentists in practice is projected to grow only 12% from 1996-2020, while the profession is expected to become ethnically more diverse. The cost of dental education, adjusted for inflation, grew 125% from 1974 to 1996. Dental schools have graduated 29% fewer students annually since 1996, but the number of applicants to dental colleges has increased as dentists' incomes have risen. Dental incomes are rising, but the hours spent in patient care have remained steady.

Trends in the dental health work force
Article Abstract:
Although the number of active private practitioners increased 19% between 1982 and 1997, the rate of increase may slow down. In addition, the increase has not kept pace with the increase in population. In fact, the number of active private practitioners per 1,000 people began to drop in 1991. More and more women are training in dentistry and are younger on average than their male counterparts.
