Depressive episodes in premenstrual syndrome
Article Abstract:
Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is a group of symptoms marked by physical, mental and emotional changes which occur before the onset of menstruation. Depression, one of the most debilitating symptoms, is commonly reported. Similarities and differences between the depression associated with PMS and that of a psychiatric affective disorder, endogenous depression, are not clear cut. Patients with endogenous depression have irregularly pulsed blood levels of cortisol, a hormone produced by the adrenal glands. This diagnostic marker has not been examined in patients with PMS. Episodes of cortisol secretion were measured over a 24-hour period in 16 women with PMS, six women with endogenous depression and 16 healthy women. Mood and depression scores worsened after ovulation, during the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle. In endogenously depressed women, depression scores were three times higher than those measured in PMS patients during luteal phase depression. Women with endogenous depression had cortisol pulses which were higher and lasted longer than those of PMS and healthy patients. PMS patients had episodes of depression which occurred specifically in the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle. The cortisol changes which occurred in patients with endogenous depression did not occur in patients with PMS. The results demonstrate that the depression associated with PMS is distinctly different than that of endogenous depression. (Consumer Summary produced by Reliance Medical Information, Inc.)

Optical detection of high-grade cervical intraepithelial neoplasia in vivo: results of a 604-patient study
Article Abstract:
A study is conducted to assess the in vivo optical detection of high-grade cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (2/3+) on the whole cervix with a noncontact, spectroscopic device. Full cervix optical interrogation for the detection of high-grade cervical intraepithelial neoplasia is feasible and appears capable of detecting more high-grade cervical intraepithelial neoplasia than colposcopy alone.

Altered immune response in adult women exposed to diethylstilbestrol in utero
Article Abstract:
Women who were exposed to diethylstilbestrol in the womb appear to have a different T cell response to foreign proteins than women who were not. Further research is needed to determine how this altered immune response affects their health.
