Disease and suspicion after the Persian Gulf War
Article Abstract:
Two large 1996 studies add to the evidence that Persian Gulf War veterans do not suffer from higher rates of disease than other veterans. The studies looked at mortality and hospitalization rates in Persian Gulf veterans compared to other veterans. In the more than 600,000 Persian Gulf veterans, mortality rates were 9% higher than in other veterans, but 80% died from accidents, suicide or homicide while only 20% died from disease. Hospitalization rates for serious illness were no higher in the Persian Gulf veterans than in their counterparts. Physicians have been unable to identify any new disease resulting from the war.

Can house calls survive?
Article Abstract:
It would be unfortunate if house calls fade away, although their steady decline suggests it is happening. A review of 1993 Medicare claims found that only about nine of every 1,000 patients over 65 received a visit by their doctor. House calls take additional time and do not provide the facilities available in the office. Patients and families appreciate and benefit from home visits. House calls allow a doctor to assess a patient's function at home, which can prevent hospitalization by early intervention. Increased reimbursement would help support this important service to the neediest patients.
