Desperate for sleep
Article Abstract:
The American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) in Westchester, IL, has identified 84 different sleep disorders among 20 percent to 25 percent of American children who have trouble sleeping. The team at the sleep clinic examines infants and toddlers who won't fall or stay asleep, children with autism or ADHD who wreak havoc during the night and kids with nocturnal habits like sleepwalking or sleep terrors.

The sleep-wake switch: a neuronal alarm clock
Article Abstract:
Researchers have discovered a segregated set of neurons that appear to regulate sleep in the ventrolateral preoptic region of the hypothalamus. It contains descending pathways to other neurons in the upper brainstem that promote wakefulness.

A gene called CLOCK appears to be responsible for the fact that some people are night people and some are day people. The gene was first discovered in people with advanced sleep phase syndrome.
